Being Given A Second Chance

Please say “hello” to Kwan! Kwan has been with Sound Community Services for 18 months and is our Residential Recovery Specialist with the Bent Crandall Program, a one-year program for fourteen individuals with co-occurring disabilities of mental illness and substance abuse.

Like so many, Kwan has a story. Kwan states a quote from Malcom X, “Don’t be in such a hurry to condemn a person because he or she doesn’t do what you do or think as you think or as fast. There was a time when you didn’t know what you know today.” Kwan was once incarcerated for a crime he committed and with time, he learned he could get it right again, he just needed some patience to get back on the right track. His grandmother always reminded him that life is a journey and to enjoy the process no matter if you hit a few bumps in the road.

Today, Kwan is a college student, a husband, a father, and outside of work he is a mentor to other men that were incarcerated as well. Kwan states, “I am proud of my journey because agencies such as Sound Community allows second chances for individuals like me. Sound Community has given me an extraordinary opportunity to be a change agent. This agency has allowed me to give back in ways that I could not have imagined.”

Thank you, Kwan, and to all our Bent Crandall Program staff for all you do every day!
