Jennifer E. Fournier, Esq., Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel of Sound Community Services, began her career at Bellevue Hospital in New York City writing grants for the HIV/AIDS program. Within 9 months she transitioned into her role on the Executive Director’s Senior Cabinet. Her first day in that role was 9/11 and Jen was deeply honored to work on the 9/11 response team, alongside some of the most truly remarkable first responders she has ever had the privilege to stand beside. Since that time, Jennifer has focused on serving organizations within the health and human services field, with the majority of her career spent in nonprofits. Throughout her career, she has not only performed as in-house counsel in various organizations but has also overseen administrative and operational service areas for the organizations she worked with. Jen has overseen everything from human resources and compliance to IT, document management, quality improvement, and administration. She has successfully led multiple accreditations with the Joint Commission and URAC and most notably led Triad Healthcare to full accreditation with The National Committee on Quality Assurance within only 8 months from the original application to site visit; one of the fastest accreditation cycles the NCQA has ever experienced.
Jen’s human resource practice has encompassed the life-cycle of employment (from hire to separation), organizational improvement, succession planning, the implementation of best practices in recruiting & retaining talent and coaching & mentoring staff in communication and leadership skills. She has conducted supervisory training, designed meaningful performance appraisals and created strategic plans for organizational growth and development.
Jen’s legal work has spanned healthcare, labor, and employment, contracts and compliance as well as a general business practice. A goal-oriented attorney with strength in leadership, organizational development and management, she has sought to improve the non-profits she worked with by providing hands-on guidance, counsel and mentoring in order to achieve individual and organizational goals. Jen has done this, in part by supporting employees in realizing their potential and streamlining operations so they function more effectively. By introducing technology solutions, empowering employees and growing leaders to be connected to people, instead of a title, Jennifer has enjoyed success in her career that goes beyond the typical legal practice.
Jen began her academic career at Holderness School in Plymouth, NH. She earned her honors BA in history, and minor studies in philosophy, from The Catholic University of America and then went on to study law at The Catholic University Columbus School of Law where she was the recipient of the First Lap Award for excellence in first-year law studies. Always eager to continue learning, Jennifer took two intensive mini-MBA courses at Boston University; which brought together corporate counsel from around the world to study the complexities of joining law and business practices. Jen is a frequent speaker for the Association of Corporate Counsel and is the Vice-Chair for the Association’s Employment and Labor Law Committee. Jen is also an active member of the Society for HR Management, particularly around legislative advocacy.
When she isn’t working, Jen can be found paddling on Connecticut’s quiet waters in her pink kayak, biking on the Connecticut Rail Trails, relaxing at the beach, munching on popcorn at the movies and most importantly, spending time with her husband, kids (when they come home from college to visit!) and dogs.
